News organizations aren’t in the information business. They’re in the attention economy. Every headline, every “breaking” alert, every panel of interchangeable experts exists to monetize your focus. Outrage travels. Fear sells. Nuance stalls. If you’re still clinging to the idea that journalism is about truth-telling, look at the funding structure. Corporate-owned networks depend on advertisers. Subscription platforms depend on outrage churn. And everyone depends on metrics—clicks, shares, likes, time-on-page. These aren’t indicators of truth. They’re indicators of how effectively your lizard brain was triggered.

What counts as “news” isn’t determined by relevance. It’s determined by velocity. A celebrity scandal gets more coverage than a policy shift affecting millions, because the scandal generates comment threads. A viral video of public outburst will dominate the front page, while systemic issues—housing, healthcare, wage stagnation—stay buried in back sections no one clicks. The question isn’t “Is this important?” It’s “Will this keep them scrolling?”

And if you think you’re immune—because you read “serious” outlets, follow “credible” journalists, subscribe to newsletters with long words—congratulations, you’ve bought a more sophisticated version of the same product. The tone may be drier, the font serifed, but the incentives are identical. Keep the subscriber engaged. Keep the advertiser happy. Keep the reader just informed enough to feel smart, but not enough to feel equipped. Informed people ask questions. Engaged people keep consuming.

News isn’t neutral. It’s curated. Every story is a product of editorial selection, placement, emphasis. Which quotes are included. Which statistics are left out. Which experts are given the last word. And those decisions are rarely about accuracy—they’re about alignment. Political, cultural, commercial. You’re not getting reality. You’re getting a version of it designed to reinforce your sense of where you belong, what you should fear, and who deserves blame. Facts are flexible. Narratives are fixed.

Even the language is strategic. Protesters are “rioters” or “demonstrators” depending on which side they’re on. Economic decisions are framed as “necessary reforms” or “destructive cuts” depending on who benefits. A bomb is “surgical” when we drop it, and “barbaric” when they do. This isn’t spin. This is doctrine. News organizations aren’t just reporting events—they’re scripting morality plays where you’re supposed to cheer or boo on cue.

The obsession with speed makes this worse. In the race to be first, accuracy is treated as optional. Errors are buried in corrections no one reads. Context is sacrificed for immediacy. Speculation fills gaps where facts don’t exist yet. And when reality eventually contradicts the initial narrative, no one cares. The emotional hit already landed. The dopamine spike already passed. Retractions don’t trend. Rage does.
